Interpretation of American History in the Context of Contemporary U.S. Society: From Bradley Commission to 21st Century History Curriculum

The thesis aims to analyze the relationship of the collective memory of an individual and his/her inclusion with the society and eventual ability to generate social capital. This paper evaluates the American federal education system and its interpretation of the historical narrative to the students. The focus of this thesis is the interpretation of historical events in the context of American society, whose structure has changed fundamentally over the past 30 years. Not only society has suffered a significant change, the federal system of student testing and the federal education institutions' funding have been revised too. American society can benefit from it through internal intercourse or, on the contrary, it can become more fragmented if it fails to bring the individual into a contemporary social setting. The work has been defined in time since the Bradley Commission has issued general recommendations to change approach to historical curricula, and then continues to explore the development until 2014. The political changes with the end of the Cold War led to a constant reinterpretation of American history and the secondary the collective identity. In the new millennium and after the year 2014 it has concluded in a discussion about historical education on academic, social and political fields....

Miloš Josef Pulec and Old Catholic Church

This thesis focuses on Dr. Miloš Josef Pulec as a personality, and particularly on his relationship to the Old Catholic Church. We will see Pulec first as a newly ordained priest, then suspended, then as a priest of the Prague parish, an influential man behind the Old Catholic Church synod meetings, and finally in the eighties also an episcopal administrator. He played out an important role in the crisis of 1969-72, which in effect led to break-up of the church into an official and an underground one and to several problems which caused the church significant losses in property as well as number of members. Pulec was accused of being closely in contact with the authorities and misusing these contacts to solve conflicts in the church administration. Pulec was not only a clergyman, his works focused on many other fields: he was interested in history, anthropology, pragensia and mycology. His life's legacy is for now mostly seen in a very negative light - the goal of the thesis is not to intentionally change this view, but rather to describe the influence of an individual on an organization, and his reflection in the history.

Massacre in Lidice and Kľak Valley - comparison of media representation and historical reflection

This thesis analyzes the tendencies in the press of given era and the development of social discussion on burning of Lidice village and Klak and Ostrý Gruň settlements through discourse-historical approach and other sociological concepts. It specifically follows the level of awareness and media content of selected periodicals from the time of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the transitional period of the existence of the Slovak State, over 40 years of the communist era, until the renewed or newly created periodicals of the Velvet Revolution, to the present, meant 2017. Usually by decades, always on the anniversary date of the event. The thesis attempts to confirm the hypothesis that sensitive historical events tend to be interpreted with bias, in compliance with the current regime, through (in this case) printed media; were they owned by government, opposition, or even those who are seeking (political) impartiality.

Roots of Stalin's positive interpretation in Russia under Putin's presidency

This Bachelor thesis aims to reveal the roots of the positive interpretations of Stalin in Russia under Putin's presidency (2000-2008). At the beginning of the new millennium we witnessed an increase in popularity and uncritical perception of this Soviet leader in the eyes of the Russian public. The thesis examines on which grounds this nostalgia for the Stalin era is based. It explains how during the 1990s the country was facing a difficult post-communist transition to liberal democracy, which contributed to fostering this sentiment. The thesis also analyzes the results of public survey polls to determine which achievements and values of the Stalin era are appreciated by the citizens of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, it touches upon publications by the Russian academic community in order to explore their interpretation of Joseph Stalin's rule and how they might contribute to his positive assessement by the public. It also shows how the political elite succeeding to power in 2000 deliberately supported and fomented this sentiment of nostalgia; what its concrete steps are; and their motivations and implications. The thesis concludes that the period of chaos under President Boris Yeltsin, when the public felt a decline in the living standards and prestige of the country, had a large influence...
